Dinner Set
w/ Ricardo Scales
"The black Liberace," Ricardo Scales' nickname, only tells part of the pianist's
story. Like the real Liberace, he wears flashy attire on-stage when he launches
into a set that showcases his incredible versatility. What the nickname doesn't
tell you is that the pianist has a determination as tough as steel, and he
needed every ounce of it to ever make it to the stage in the first place.
Everything from his performance to his flash makes Scales' piano playing look
fun and easy. And if you believed that, you'd be missing an inspiring story. |

Lisa Baney
|
7, 8:30 & 10 pm
Lisa Baney with
Brian Kane
Band Members: Lisa Baney
(Vocalist) and Brian Kane (Guitar).
Alternatingly sweet and husky, or edgy and hard-swinging, Lisa Baney is a
jazz vocalist of unique depth and sensitivity. She's been described as "sultry,
smooth, sweet" and "flawless" -- words that bring to mind mingled images of
uptown supper clubs, ice-cold martinis, cool neon in a San Francisco fog.
"Lisa Baney has the artistic courage to sell a song on its
own merits with such sensual finesse, I could feel the
Camembert under the glass getting soft and runny.
Her sound is grown up... resonant and rich." -- Bruce Bellingham, San
Francisco Examiner.
Exploring the deep, driving pulse of a bop tune; skimming atop the intricate
percussion of a bossa nova; wrapping around herself the aching melancholy of a
ballad -- Lisa Baney is a singer of great depth, versatility and complexity. To
listen to her is to experience, a classic polished jazz singer. -- Gerald
Nachman, San Francisco Chronicle.
Brian Kane is currently a
graduate student in music composition at the University of California, Berkeley.
In addition to being an award winning composer, he is one of the most highly
respected, and "in-demand" jazz guitarists in San Francisco. |

10/13/04 Wednesday Darryl
Rowe
7, 8:30 & 10 pm

Darryl Rowe |
Alabama native Darryl Rowe feels
it is no great mystery why he ended up singing jazz: He loves jazz and
has always been around it. Darryl has been a presence in the San
Francisco Bay area jazz scene for two decades, with appearances at
Keystone Korner, the De Anza Hotel and the Montreaux Jazz Festival in
Switzerland. He has worked with Woody Herman, Dexter Gordon, Sergio
Mendez, Bobby McFerrin, and Patrice Rushin. His voice moves easily from
jazz standards to R&B and soul stylings. "We The People" is a jazz
project that brings together the talents of an interesting blend of
musical characters, headed by the velvety tones of singer Darryl Rowe.

10/14/04 Thursday Robert
Stewart
8 & 10 pm

Robert Stewart |
Drum Legend BILLY HIGGINS:
"Stewart is perhaps the most important young artist to come along in
decades!"
Amazingly however, Robert Stewart did not even begin to play the
saxophone until the age of 17. Born and raised in Oakland, California,
basketball had been the primary passion of his youth. His 6ft. 4in.
frame, earned him varsity shooting guard status on the Fremont High
School basketball team for two years. However, Stewart was struck by
divine revelation shortly after graduating from Fremont. While surfing
the radio to find a Rap or R&B station, Stewart stumbled upon a
traditional jazz piece being performed by a tenor saxophonist who
sounded as though he were literally possessed or enraged. |

made forays into pop and folk music but found a home in jazz. These days, he's
an avid enthusiast of the Great American Songbook, drawing inspiration from Mel
Tormé, Johnny Hartman, Louis Armstrong, Anita O'Day, and Chet Baker. The
hallmarks of Robinson's sound: smoothness, lyrical insight, and an adventurous

10/27/04 Wednesday Jonathan
Poretz
8 & 10 pm

Jonathan Poretz |
Some say he was born with a
microphone in his hand. That would explain why New York native Jonathan
Poretz is so comfortable performing his brand of great American jazz
standards to audiences large and small. Blending the swinging vocal
stylings of Sinatra, Torme, Bennett and Darin with a modern pop approach
to singing, Jonathan puts his own unique stamp on every song he sings
and every story he tells through the great American standard songbook.
A finalist in the IMS jazz competition held at Club Jazz Nouveau this
summer, Jonathan has recently appeared at the "Jazz On The River" and
"Calistoga Jazz" festivals with the Harold Jones Big Band and also the
"Sausalito Art Festival" with the Starduster Orchestra.
Jonathan will be joined on the Club Jazz Nouveau stage with an all-star
quartet: led by legendary Count Basie (drummer); Harold Jones; Bay Area
