KENNY WASHINGTON, Singer
 |
5 8 pm Dinner Show w/Ricardo Scales First Show: 8 pm
Second Show: 10 pm
|
A native of New Orleans, Kenny Washington developed a deep love for music
at a very young age, singing and performing gospel at the local Baptist Church.
Performing with school bands, he picked up the saxophone, sang and performed at
school-related functions. At age 22, Kenny began working professionally with
various groups performing varied styles of music ranging from traditional and
contemporary jazz, classical, rhythm, blues and pop. Joining the honorary U. S.
Navy Band in 1986, Kenny performed and toured for 9 years nationally and
internationally as a saxophonist and vocalist. Making his home in the San
Francisco Bay Area in 1995, Kenny found himself working night clubs and various
recording projects locally and nationally. Emulating the classic scat styles of
Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, infusion colors of Stevie Wonder and Donny
Hathaway, Kenny's freedom-play approach with over a four-octave range makes him
one of the most versatile artists of our time.

Wanda Stafford grew up in Indianapolis where she learned the roots of jazz sitting in and jamming with musicians like the Montgomery Brothers, Leroy Vinnegar, David Baker, J. J. Johnson, Freddie Hubbard, Al Plank, and many more.
Ms. Stafford, with her slightly smoky voice, displays a timing and bluesy feeling that makes for rich listening. Wanda conveys a story in her songs; she is articulate and immaculate in her presentation, with an added laid-back bluesy shrewdness. -- Ferdinand Maylin

RICARDO SCALES, Piano
 |
1st Show: 7:30 pm
2nd Show: 9:30 pm
|
"The black Liberace," Ricardo Scales' nickname, only tells part of the pianist's story. Like the real Liberace, he wears flashy attire on-stage when he launches into a set that showcases his incredible versatility. What the nickname doesn't tell you is that the pianist has a determination as tough as steel, and he needed every ounce of it to ever make it to the stage in the first place. Everything from his performance to his flash makes Scales' piano playing look fun and easy. And if you believed that, you'd be missing an inspiring story.

SECOND NATURE / OPENS WITH STEVE CHASTAIN
 |
5 8 pm Dinner Show w/Ricardo Scales
First Show: 8 pm
Second Show: 10 pm |
Opening Act: Steve Chastain was the child of a career Navy man (and harmonica player), and the travels the family undertook landed Steve in Spain at age nine, where he commenced guitar lessons with the local maestro. Dad was good with electronics, and it rubbed off on Steve, who constructed his first guitar amp at 13. Once back in the US, Steve experienced a bolt of lightning in the form of Joni Mitchell records, and Steve knew what he had to do.
You may have seen Steve anywhere the Grateful Dead appeared, outside the event, playing before, after and alas, sometimes even during a show, hoping for a miracle. You may have seen him opening for Richard Thompson at Villa Montalvo, playing the main stage at Paul Masson Mountain winery, or Mountain Charlie's, or The Garret, or at his favorite sounding board the CafŽ Classique in El Granada. You may have seen him listening for the local buzz on the next time Neil Young will play The Landing.
As major influences, Jerry Garcia, John Renbourn, Steven Stills, and Leo Kottke top the list, and lately, Martin Simpson has provided what proved to be invaluable guidance and inspiration. Steve can also be spotted performing with The Bonepickers Trio and his own trio The Midnight Riders. You can look forward to Steve's eagerly-awaited new CD project, which is in the works.
Headliner: Second Nature makes
listeners' heads turn with its interesting combination of jazz, funk, fusion,
blues, reggae, R&B, Latin, and other music genres -- as well as its
improvisational, innovative, energetic, and fiery style of playing. Second
Nature continues to excite audiences with its fresh sense of music and
infectious grooves. Regrouped with new members making the lineup Chaz--saxophones
and flute, Eddie Williams--guitar, Jack Liebig--keyboards, R. Kirk Bryant--bass,
and Joseph M. Lee--drums and percussion.

in November 2001. He had surgery, Gamma knife radiation and therapy to
rehabilitate him enough so he could come home in late January 2002. The
radiation slowed the growth of the very aggressive non-operable tumor (anaplastic
astrocytoma). Barney requires 24 hour home care and therapy. He is almost blind,
but he is able to still talk a little on the phone and receives visitors and
enjoys listening to music. Barney has no life insurance. He has not worked in

 |
5 8 pm Dinner Show w/Ricardo Scales First Show: 8 pm
Second Show: 10 pm
|
Elaine Lucia and her Offbeat Trio: Jonathan Alford, piano, Pierre Archain, bass, Alan Hall, drums.
It's not easy to decide which facet of Elaine Lucia's musical talent is most impressive. The growing audiences are enraptured by her amazing voice with its clarity, warmth and amazing range. She has a singular ability to take obscure and well known songs and make them her own. Then there's her ability to coax the best out of the musicians who so much enjoy working with her because of her arranging inventiveness. She's developed a reputation among sidemen as a "musician's singer," a vocalist with an eclectic song list and her own unique arrangements and interpretations. Elaine's formative years and career, including her opera studies as a student at the Eastman School of Music, show why she is one of the rare true jazz singers whose classical background is a definite asset.
"The band is great, but you will remember this voice!" -- JazzUSA.com
"Add Elaine Lucia to the list of up-and-coming jazz vocalists who deserve to be discovered..." -- Scott Yanow, LA Jazz Scene

"Flutist Gerald Beckett has a powerful way of expressing an extensive
range of moods, while maintaining a genuine post-bop feel." - Elaine Washington,
JazzReview.com
This has been one of many ways critics have described the playing of flutist
Gerald Beckett. His first CD entitled "Black Eyes" released last year, made the
top 50 of the Jazz Week Charts. A graduate of the University of North Texas,
Beckett has been in San Francisco since 1985. He studied classical flute at the
San Francisco Conservatory of Music for 7 years. He has also studied jazz with
