    Trace Ellington
Trace Ellington, the younger branch of the Duke Ellington Dynasty has brought a new breath of life into the urban music realm. He has worked with artists near and abroad from Rapheal Saadiq of (Tony, Tone, Toni) Prince, and John Papa of the "Blues Travelers". This multi-talented producer, songwriter, and singer presents a strong presence on stage resurrecting sounds comparable to Sly and The Family Stone, Curtis Mayfield, and Jimi Hendrix.

The son of famed recording artist Merl Saunders, his mother, Betty was also a well-known music historian. Tony has always been a natural. With his father's guidance and his mother's encouragement he studied piano for over 13 years and was awarded a fellowship at the prestigious San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Tony was fortunate enough to receive his first piano lessons from the world-renowned musician Herbie Hancock and intensive bass guitar training with the legendary Chuck Rainey and John Kahn. When Tony was just 17, he took the stage with his father and Jerry Garcia.

12/4/04    Saturday    Zakiya Hooker & Bluz 4 U
                                       8 pm & 10
pm

     Zakiya Hooker

At first glance it would seem that Zakiya Hooker was born into the blues. After all, her father is blues legend John Lee Hooker. But rather than relying on her father, Zakiya has pursued life -- and music -- on her own terms, overcoming personal tragedy along the way.

Her Pointblank Records debut, Flavors Of the Blues, opens with a cover of the Robert Johnson classic "Stones in My Passway," illustrating Zakiya’s supple blues and smooth, jazz-inflected style. Elsewhere, the results range from tempestuous ("Art Of Divorce" and "Let’s Do Something") to delicate and moody ("Protect Me From The Blues," "New Orleans Rain, " and the torch song gem "Drowning In Your Love"). Joining his daughter and Charlie Musselwhite in the studio, John Lee Hooker lends his inimitable presence on the track "Bit By Love (Hard Times)."
