"The black Liberace," Ricardo Scales' nickname, only tells part of the pianist's
story. Like the real Liberace, he wears flashy attire on-stage when he launches
into a set that showcases his incredible versatility. What the nickname doesn't
tell you is that the pianist has a determination as tough as steel, and he
needed every ounce of it to ever make it to the stage in the first place.
Everything from his performance to his flash makes Scales' piano playing look
fun and easy. And if you believed that, you'd be missing an inspiring story. |

Stafford

Bill Evans among others. In the 60's she recorded "In Love For The Very First
Time" on Roulette Records in New York. Originally from Indianapolis, she later
moved to San Francisco and became a part of the then thriving North Beach jazz
scene.
Ms Stafford, with her slightly smoky voice, displays a timing and bluesy feeling
that makes for rich listening... Wanda conveys a story in her songs; she is
articulate and immaculate in her presentation, with an added laid-back bluesy
shrewdness. -- Ferdinand Maylin, jazznow.com. |

Soul Sauce |
Latin Jazz.
If you like Cal Tjader, Latin jazz – or very accessible music played
well, dynamically, and with attention to texture and creative
arrangements – check out Soul Sauce. Their CD Got Sauce? contains 14
tunes, including a wonderful rendition of "Dindi" with Eriksen on
harmonica. As much as I enjoy his vibes playing, I’d gladly listen to a
Soul Sauce CD that only featured his harmonica blowing. Like Toots,
Eriksen is able to sing and emote through the instrument in a way that
cuts straight to your heart. -- By Dave Roberts, AllAboutJazz.com. |

Extensions |
10 am to 2 pm
Jazz Sunday Brunch w/
Extensions Jazz Quartet
This quartet defines the fusion of energy and sincerity.
Extensions is a blend of hard bop, free, funk, modal, and modern with overtones
of great musicians such as John Coltrane, Joe Henderson, McCoy Tyner, and Woody
Shaw. Extensions is not just another jazz group playing old standards with out
any feeling. These musicians are young, fiery, and they play the songs that make
people say things like, "That’s a good tune! No one ever plays that", or "They
do that song on my favorite Wayne Shorter record". This group of high school
juniors recently took first place in the University of Southern California High
School Jazz Invitational where they also walked away with scholarships to attend
USC. Upon hearing Extensions, many listeners share the opinion of
performer/educator Bill Watrous in thinking, "Where the h-ll did [these] guys
learn to play that kind of sh-t!?".
Band Members: Doug Mosher (Tenor and Soprano Sax), Richard Sears
(Piano/Rhodes), Ryan York (Acoustic Bass), Max Delbecq (Drums). |

8 & 10 pm
David Navarro
David C. Navarro started singing at age 10 as a member of the local church choir in the city of Oxnard, California. He later became a lead singer in a local top 40 band as he entered 7th grade. David found inspiration and musical expression in many of the Rhythm and Blues artists such as Stevie Wonder and Luther Vandross. Mindful of how unpredictable the life of a musician can be, David pursued a degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Upon graduation (and still yearning for the arts), David continued his musical growth by enrolling in several music and voice technique classes at Ventura City College. This yearning eventually led him to discover chorale singing with the Moorkpark Masterworks Chorale.
David Navarro recently won the Invitational Musicians Showcase competition at
Club Jazz Nouveau. The event was broadcasted on a local bay area station and
received rave reviews. David Navarro continues to study with vocal coach Jane
Sharp and recently with David Stroud. |
